Which cemetery websites do you use?

I've been trying to find family members' grave sites. I've found a few websites with cemetery information, and some are helpful, but some are less so. If I don't already know which cemetery someone is buried in, how can I find out? Are there resources that can help me locate cemeteries in a given county?

  1. Finding cemeteries is getting easier and easier thru www.Findagrave.com. Just use their "find a cemetery" option, fill in the search specifications and you'll undoubtedly come up with possibilities.

Finding a persons grave on their site is more hit and miss but getting better all the time. It depends on people adding gravesites to their database but happily there are people who seem take this task on for specific cemeteries. They seem to go around and add records and pictures as they have time. Others get added by family members as they find their ancestor's graves. I've found quite a few pictures and/or information on gravesites for my family members on this site but there are still many missing. The trick is to keep checking back. I think it also is a good idea to add information on your family members as you find them in order to help others and quite possibly connect with unknown cousins.

  2. I've had some success with:

Obituaries - sometimes the cemetery is mentioned, but more often the funeral home is mentioned. If the funeral home is still in business you can call them for the exact location as well as the cemetary name.

Local genealogical societies - Email the local GS to see if someone there knows anything about your relative. Their local library may have an obituary; they may have records on their local cemetaries.

  3. Findagrave is, indeed, a great resource for locating cemeteries and grave sites.
Be aware, though, that there are often duplicate records for specific cemeteries and Findagrave is very slow in fixing them.
One of the great features of Findagrave is the ability to link family records together regarless of whether or not the records are in the same cemetery. You have to be the record 'owner' to be able to do this, though.

  4. With respect to making changes to Findagrave records for your family members, Findagrave contributors are, generally, pretty good about transferring ownership of a record to a family member. You have to ask, however.
Simple corrections can be done via message to the record owner without transferring ownership.
