Here is a site with some information for you. It sounds doubtful that the lady passed thru Ellis Island in 1949, but not impossible. The following site will explain some of practices used in that time period, as established after the war.

You might also check Steve Morse's website, he is considered a expert on searching the Ellis Island site.
